If you’re dreaming of turquoise waters, snow-capped peaks, and some of the most photographed views in Canada, then a Banff 3 Lakes Tour is the perfect way to make it happen. In just one day, you can tick off Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake, and even stop by Banff town without worrying about driving, parking, or logistics.

I recently booked this day trip while visiting Alberta, and here’s everything you need to know before you go.

Getting There: Calgary to Banff

Most tours depart from Calgary, the gateway to the Canadian Rockies. I flew direct with WestJet from Edinburgh on their Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Nine hours later I was in Alberta.

From Calgary, it’s about a 1.5–2 hour drive into the mountains along the Trans-Canada Highway, which stretches an incredible 7,476 km coast to coast. On the way, you’ll even spot purpose-built wildlife crossings, ingenious bridges and tunnels that help bears, elk, and other animals move safely across the highway.

Stop 1: Lake Louise

Lake Louise

Nothing prepares you for your first glimpse of Lake Louise. After walking through the tree-lined path, the view opens up to that famous turquoise water framed by snow-dusted peaks and Victoria Glacier in the distance.

Highlights:

  • Stroll along the lakeside path for different viewpoints

  • Take photos while avoiding all the tourists who are doing the same

  • Grab a coffee or snack, though be warned, prices are steep

Even with the crowds (and yes, it’s Instagram vs. reality at times), Lake Louise is every bit as spectacular as the postcards.

Stop 2: Moraine Lake

Just a short drive away is Moraine Lake, set in the dramatic Valley of the Ten Peaks at 1,885m above sea level. Because it’s fed almost entirely by glacial meltwater, Moraine Lake is only accessible in summer, typically late June to early October.

Highlights:

  • Climb the “Rockpile” for the most iconic viewpoint

  • Capture reflections of the peaks in the still morning water

  • Experience a wilder, more rugged feel compared to Lake Louise

Personally, this was my favourite stop of the day. Moraine feels untamed, like stepping straight into the Canadian wilderness.

Stop 3: Emerald Lake (British Columbia)

Crossing the border into Yoho National Park in British Columbia, the scenery changes again. Emerald Lake lives up to its name with vivid green tones, surrounded by dense forest.

Highlights:

  • Walk across the wooden bridge for sweeping views

  • Consider staying overnight at Emerald Lake Lodge if you want a romantic cabin experience

  • Visit in the morning for calm waters and mirror-like reflections

Compared to the raw beauty of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake feels more like a resort setting with plenty of visitor facilities and cabins. Still, it’s an undeniably beautiful spot.

Bonus Stop: Natural Bridge

On the way back, our tour included a stop at the Natural Bridge, where the rushing Kicking Horse River has carved a dramatic rock formation. It’s one of those places where you can’t stop taking photos, nature’s own artwork.

Stop 4: Banff Town

No trip to the Rockies is complete without at least a quick stroll through Banff. Nestled among towering peaks, this small town is packed with shops, restaurants, and cosy cafés. It’s also the perfect base if you want to extend your trip and explore more of Banff National Park.

Tour Details & Pricing

I booked with Banff ToDo through Viator and had a brilliant experience. Our driver and guide were knowledgeable, friendly, and even offered to snap photos.

  • Cost: £77 (approx. $144 CAD / $104 USD / €89) ex tip

  • Duration: Around 12 hours (departing Calgary, with stops in Banff and the lakes)

  • Best Time to Visit: June–September for the fullest lakes and mild weather

  • What’s Included: Transport, guide, and multiple scenic stops (food and entry fees not included)

For comparison, private or small-group tours can range from $200–$400 CAD, while shuttle services to individual lakes start around $10–$20 CAD.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely. If you’re short on time but want to see the most iconic lakes of the Canadian Rockies, this tour is a must. Yes, it’s a long day and yes, the crowds are real, but the landscapes are unforgettable. From the jewel-like waters of Moraine Lake to the grandeur of Lake Louise, you’ll leave with memory card full of photos and experiences to last a lifetime.

Top Tip for Travellers: Book early. Tickets for Moraine Lake access and popular tours sell out weeks in advance during peak summer.
